Race (and 1JZ) Buildup Journal
5/26/2002 - Tranny Prep, Engine Test Fit
I broke down the transmission that came with my 1JZ. There are several differences. Besides the physical mounting differences, the 93 Soarer did not use a speedometer cable. Instead the speed sensor was located on the tail housing. In the 89 Supra, a analog, mechanical speed gauge is used, so the speedometer cable is required. Also, the ABS pickup is different. As I am using the Supra's ABS computer I will modify the harness for my 3 wire sensor. Other than that, the switch over was straight forward. I move the wiring for the solenoids to my transmission, changed the oil screen in it, changed the shift position indicator and swapped the bell housing. When I pulled my transmission off the 7M is discovered that the torque converter spline had shattered. I suspect I did this when I installed the level 10 some 30K miles ago. It has always had a rattle to it that I assumed was the modified torque converter. I have no idea how I managed to brake this machined steal spline, but maybe I twisted it (with the weight of the tranny) while installing it. Look like it is time to investigate another upgrade. After completing the transmission switch over, I did a test fit of my 1JZ with my exhaust manifold. Everything appears to fit. The MKIV engine brackets line up correctly and the manifold looks like it will have clearance. I will need to modify the intake exit feed as there is no way to make it clear the fender at present. Other issues I discovered are that I need a water pump pulley and that I don't have a map sensor (I think) with my engine like I should.
